Horseshoe Crab Book Cover Wins Award

Dan with winning coverWe are thrilled to say that the cover we designed last year for the book Horseshoe Crab: Biography of a Survivor was honored last night with an award from the Washington Book Publishers. The book, which we designed for our publishing arm, Ruka Press, was a winner in the annual Book Design and Effective Awards in the category Illustrated Cover, Commercial Publishers. We were competing with books from much larger publishers, including a number of our Washington museums, so it’s very exciting to be a winner.

This is the third time Sensical Design has been honored by the Washington Book Publishers, and the first time for Ruka Press. Special thanks to illustrator Leslie Prunty for her beautiful horseshoe crab painting.

Tainted Money Cover Wins Award

The cover we designed last year for Avi Jorisch’s book Tainted Money, highlighted here, has won an award in the Washington Book Publishers’ annual Design and Effectiveness competition. The cover won Best in Class in Typographic Covers, Commercial Publishers. This is our second win in this competition in three years. We’re very grateful for this recognition from our peers, and thankful to Avi for his trust in us.

The awards ceremony will be June 10. Details are on the Washington Book Publishers website. You can see the cover and lots of other design in our portfolio.

Judging the Washington Book Awards

The judges at the awardsI was honored to be part of a panel of judges this spring for the Washington Book Publishers’ Design and Effectiveness Awards. This annual competition showcases the best in DC-area book design (Sensical Design received an award last year). The four-judge panel is drawn from different areas of the profession: a publisher (this year, Gina Lindquist from Georgetown University Press), an editor (Bruce Gossett from the American Society of Civil Engineers), a bookseller or librarian (Nancy Davenport of the DC Public Library), and a designer (yours truly). This is unusual for a design competition, as it draws from voices other than just those of designers, and “effectiveness” is supposed to be as important as “design.”

Judging took place on a Friday in May. We judges pored over the 180 submitted entries to choose the winner in various categories and an overall Best of Show. The winners were then presented to a packed ballroom last Thursday, June 11.

Book cover wins Washington Book Publishers award

The cover of the book “Baseball, Fundraising, and the 80/20 Rule,” designed earlier this year for CASE, was honored with an award from the Washington Book Publishers on June 10. It won second place in the Small to Medium Nonprofit Publisher, Typographic Cover or Jacket category. This is the first win in this prestigious local competition for CASE, and for Sensical Design.
